YOUTH LEARN TO SAIL
Welcome to the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club’s Sailing School program, we provide a safe and fun environment for youth of all ages to learn to sail! Join us for a two week session in July or August to learn the fundamentals, improve your skills, or be involved in one of our racing programs. The RHYC Sailing School is a certified CANSail teaching center and a proud partner of the Canadian Yachting Association.

DISCOVER BOATING (AGES 6-8)
Starting July 2nd
Discover Boating is a fun program designed for children ages 6-8. This program introduces children to sailing in the Optimist Dinghy in order to establish comfort on the water in a fun environment with a strong emphasis on water safety. A typical day may include activities such as: swimming, sailing, games (on and off the water), boat trips across the bay, and much more!

WHITE SAIL I, II, III (AGES 9-12)
New CANSail 1 & 2 - Starting July, 2nd
White Sail introduces new sailors to the fundamental sailing skills in the Optimist dinghy. Course material covers safety, seamanship, and boat-handling. In the classroom, students will learn basic terminology, knots and the rules of the water. On the water, young sailors work on boat safety, boat handling skills, docking, and sail control.

TEEN WHITE SAIL I, II, II (AGE 13-17)
New CANSail 1 & 2 - Starting July, 2nd
Teen White Sail is designed to introduce teenagers to sailing. Teenagers will enjoy following the same ciriculum as the Youth White Sail program but in a separate classroom and in the larger, double-handed 420 dinghy. Course material covers safety, seamanship, and boat-handling. In the classroom, students will learn basic terminology, knots and the rules of the water. On the water, young sailors work on boat safety, boat handling skills, docking, and sail control.

BRONZE SAIL IV & V
New CANSail 3 & 4 - Starting July, 2nd
The Bronze program builds upon the fundamental skills established in White Sail on the water and in the classroom. Sailors will develop advanced boat handling skills and learn how to trapeze and fly spinnaker in the 420 dinghy. Bronze sailors will also be introduced to the basic racing skills needed to compete in club race-nights.

White Sail III or Equivalent

OPTI DEVELOPMENT
Starting July 30th
The Opti Development program is for sailors who have successfully completed White Sail III and who have demonstrated a keen interest in racing. This course focuses on improving boat-handling skills and reinforcing proper technique. Sailors will also be introduced to the fundamental racing theory and tactical skills. The sailors will also attend local regattas and race-nights to apply their skills and knowledge in competition.

OPTI RACING
Starting July 2nd
The Optimist Race team is a full summer program for those sailors who have existing racing experience and are looking to improve their skills towards a high performance level. This team attends several regattas throughout the season requiring more dedication from both the sailor and parents. Team members will be required to participate in a fitness and nutrition program tailored to their age group.

RHYC RACE TEAM
New CANSail 5 & 6 - Starting June, 27th
The RHYC Racing program is a comprehensive course for sailors 14-18 years of age who are interested in racing or to continue to develop their racing skills. The course is taught in single and double-handed boats including 420, Laser, and Radial.
The program requires a high level of commitment for both athlete and parent. Sailors are expected to participate in a fitness and nutrition program in addition to daily on water training and theory instruction. The parents are an important part of the team and are expected to chaperone and/or tow trailers to regattas. Please contact us for more information.

ABLE SAIL
The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club has sailboats specifically designed for individuals who require a bit more support in the boat due to a disability. The RHYC provides both the Access 2.3 Dinghies as well as Martin 16’s. Wednesday night sessions are our usual Sailing evenings.

SPRING TRAINING - Starting May 1st
Spring Training is an excellent opportunity to get a head start on the competitive season. The focus of the program is to prepare racers for the summer by working on boat-handling skills in a variety of wind conditions. We require sailors to have adequate clothing and for a range of weather and water conditions we may encounter. Optimist, 420, Laser, Radial, and 29er sailors are invited to participate in Spring Training.

• Session lengths are as listed in the brochure and run full weeks including holidays.
• Youth Classes run from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm daily.
• Equipment needed: life jacket with whistle attached, hat, sunglasses, sun screen, towel, swimsuit & extra clothing.
• Fees do not include regatta registration, transportation or other costs associated with attendance at regattas.
